  • Strength areas - In what technical areas am I considered a subject matter expert?
  • Improvement areas - What technical skills need to be improved to be a better leader?
  • Suggestions for improvement - What can I do to build my functional acumen?

Acumen™ is based on our experience in working with thousands of technical leaders across multiple business sectors and organizational levels, our executive coaching efforts, and our extensive studies of functional excellence. A total of 28 surveys are included in the Acumen™ library. Each survey typically includes from five to seven technical competencies and approximately 30 rated items (5 items per technical competency). Each survey asks raters to make ratings of technical proficiency using a 5-point scale and includes three open-ended items.

About The Author

Van Latham, PhD is an industrial and organizational psychologist with a broad business, human resources, consulting, and academic background. Dr. Latham spent 12 years in human resources leadership positions with PepsiCo and Iron Mountain before founding PathPoint Consulting.

Prior to his business career, Dr. Latham was an Assistant Professor of Management and Organizational Behavior at Creighton University. He is a member of the American Psychological Association and The Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychologists.

He holds a B.A. in Psychology from Baylor University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Wayne State University.
