360 Reviews
Understanding and Utilizing Them to Best Advantage

360 reviews can give leaders the input they need, from the people who know them best, to make the right changes to succeed. (360 reviews are also called 360 surveys, 360 degree surveys, 360 feedback and multi-rater feedback.)

Why use a 360 review process?

Meaningful Feedback:
360 reviews provide leaders with valuable feedback from individuals, key to their short term and long-term success. Direct reports, peers, managers, and sometimes customers who know the participants well, all have important information to contribute to the process. If collected confidentially, and used effectively this feedback can help leaders focus on the right goals and achieve those goals.

Reliable Feedback:
Because 360 reviews embody perspectives from different types of raters, the feedback gathered gives leaders a well-rounded view of how others perceive their performance. The broader scope of feedback that 360 reviews include, over traditional manager-only reviews, also lends credibility to the process.

Fair Feedback:
360 reviews are best conducted in a confidential manner so raters feel comfortable providing accurate and honest feedback. A minimum of at least three raters per rater group, (other than self and manager) are typically invited to respond. If there are too few raters, the results are combined in order to protect rater anonymity.

Clear Actionable Reports:
Comprehensive 360 review reports give leaders a clear picture of their overall performance and highlight their strengths and areas for development.

Effective Development Plan:
The 360 review results help leaders identify areas where they want to focus their efforts, either by building on existing strengths or spending time on skills needing improvement.

Optimizing the Investment:
360 reviews also provide the organization with important insights about their leadership team, helping administrators make the right calls in developing promising leaders: assigning mentors, optimizing training dollars, and creating coaching opportunities.

Enhancing Overall Workforce:
360 feedback reviews have been used for over half a century as an effective tool to increase overall productivity and profitability. Improving individual leadership is known to be the single most effective thing an organization can do to impact employee satisfaction and engagement.
