The first step to keeping data safe is to prevent commingling of data. Many companies try to prevent commingling data by offering separate databases for each client, but hackers can hack multiple databases once they’ve figured out how to get into your system. Whether your data is in its own database or a shared database, the key to stopping hackers is encryption.
At STAR, all of our data, and all access to our data are encrypted using the American Encryption Standard (AES). We’ve been reviewed and approved by the security teams at some of the largest banks and credit card companies in the country. In our system, there are no names, no email addresses, nothing in the clear. Everything is encrypted. Everything is safe.
Our intrusion detection software is vigilant and notifies us immediately of any attempted hacks through the internet. Our firewall stops them cold. Our security team includes certified CCNA and MCSE consultants who constantly monitor and test our firewall and intrusion detection software, keeping us ahead of the field.
Each 360 survey participant or rater has his/her own private survey key, because even if the data resides in a separate database, individual data can be hacked into unless the data is properly encrypted. A survey process is only as good as the equipment and facility that hosts it. If the equipment fails, so does the survey. That’s why we’ve architected our systems using industrial grade equipment with two of everything. If a hard drive dies, there is a second one already in place. If a switch malfunctions, we have a second one running so the system automatically uses the new switch. So — even in the unlikely event that a piece of equipment does fail the user experience is uninterrupted.
We host our equipment in a SAS 70 compliant facility, which provides the highest level of redundancy in the industry. It has multiple access points to the internet and multiple power sources. Should the power fail or internet access be cut off, the facility provides instant backup.
